What were the main causes of gentrification in Karlín following the 2002 floods? And what role did the massive privatization of the housing stock—or the exploitation of the crisis by various actors—play in the transformation of this post-industrial neighborhood?

One of the main impacts of the floods was the displacement of the Romani population, which was significantly driven by normative racism. This was exploited to portray this part of Prague in a stereotypical light, leading to a radical transformation of the area’s socioeconomic composition. Come see buildings that tell a story about real estate mechanisms, but also carry a different kind of social memory.

The tour is based on the research and subsequent exhibition “Pro/Měna Karlín,” which took place in 2020 at the ViPer Gallery and was curated by architects Eliška Málková and Lynda Zein, in collaboration with sociologist Barbora Matysová. Lynda will guide you through the walk; as part of her research at the Academy of Sciences, she focuses on the instrumentalization of disasters and crises in the neoliberal urban environment.

The walk will be in Czech with simultaneous translation to English.

Looking forward to seeing you!
